Gala Fairydean 2
IMAGE PRINTERS CUP
After a disappointing midweek result against Gretna 2008, Gala Fairydean travelled to the capital on Saturday to take on Edinburgh University in the first round of the Image Printers Cup.
But the Dean's ba
d luck continued as they came away empty-handed following a well-fought contest which saw the home side snatch a win with two dubious decisions from referee Brain Colvin.
The match started well with both sides clearly chasing the win and not content to sit back.
Half an hour of good fluid football provided plenty of entertainment for the crowd, but the turning point came when Edinburgh's Redman struck home to give his side the lead, despite being offside by a good few yards.
But, missed by Colvin, the goal was allowed, leaving the frustrated visitors with plenty to do in the second half.
Things got worse after the break, however, when, first, Antoni was given all the space in the world for a free header and then the referee once again dismissed offside appeals as Hughes slid home Edinburgh's third.
Gala's fortunes began to change when Hewitson found the back of the net after Edinburgh keeper Tait fumbled a well-struck cross from Jay Wilson in the six-yard box.
Then, with 10 minutes on the clock, the University defence was caught sleeping and, after scrambling to clear the ball, Tait was caught in no-man's-land as a cross from Noble drifted over his head into the far corner of the net.
But with both sides locking down defensively, the remaining minutes were played out without further score and Gala returned home with an early exit from the cup.
