Rotarian Anne falls for fund-raisers
Kelso Rotary Club has met its targets in all areas during the past Rotary year, it was reported to last Thursday's meeting which saw Gordon Euman succeed John Baxter as club president.
Locally, the club provided stewards for the St Andrew's Fayre, donated two orthopaedic beds to Kelso Hospital and has funded fridges in the newly-refurbished Borders General Hospital maternity suites. Rotarians worked with Kelso High School, supporting two pupils through the District Young Musicians competition and sponsoring two students at the RYLA leadership camps. They have also put forward a university student, Katie Scott-Aiton from Gordon, for a Rotary Peace Scholarship and will continue to support her as she goes through the selection process.
Nationally, the club made a donation to the Stroke Association. At international level, Kelso Rotary Club entered into a matching grant application (MGA) with the Rotary Club of Kalimpong in West Bengal. Both clubs raised funds and these were matched with contributions from Rotary International and District 1020 so that the project could start.
The two clubs are funding the design, development and construction of toilet and washroom blocks (utilising rain water harvesting) at the Robertson Memorial Primary School in Kalimpong.
The club also part-funded another MGA – to help construct a bridge in Lilongwe, Malawi, to save locals long walks to school and market.
This year also saw Rotary International launch the End Polio Now campaign and the Kelso Club has donated £1,500 towards the fund. Funding for the many projects was generated by a silent auction and supper at Ednam village hall and a sponsored parachute jump by member Anne Wright.
There have been several social events through the year – the Edinburgh Tattoo, a carol concert, Burns Night, Valentine's dinner and several partners' nights.
The Kelso club also organised and ran the District Conference in Carlisle where one of their number, John Lafferty, was District Governor. There have also been trips abroad to Krakov and Keukenhof in the Netherlands.
The Rotary Club of Kelso welcomes new members. Indeed, the solitary woman member would particularly appreciate some female company! More information about Rotary can be obtained from any member.
